The "200 Cupcake" Solution: Skip the prep time. Our Lemon Honey serves as a pre-balanced base for gourmet buttercreams and fillings. One 16 oz Baker’s Roll provides enough concentrated flavor for large-scale dessert production without the need for additional zesting or infusions.
Consistent Crumb: Use our Plain artisan butter in shortbread or pie crusts to achieve a richer, more tender crumb that highlights the quality of the cream.
Who Started Lake and Churn?
Lake and Churn was started by Chris and Jess, two people living and working in the Minnetonka area of Minnesota's west metro.
Chris handles the business side — the website, the marketing, and getting Lake and Churn in front of the right people. Jess runs the kitchen. She develops every recipe, tests every batch, and doesn't let anything out the door until it's exactly right. Between the two of them, they've built something small, deliberate, and worth talking about.
Lake and Churn launched in 2026 with four flavors and a simple goal: bringing butter back to the table!
Compound Butter, Explained
What is compound butter? Compound butter is butter blended with additional ingredients — fresh herbs, roasted garlic, spices, honey, or citrus — to create something more layered and versatile than plain butter alone. It's been a staple in professional kitchens for decades and is now one of the fastest growing specialty food categories among home cooks, grillers, and food enthusiasts from Minnesota to across the country.
Lake and Churn compound butters come in four flavors — Plain, Garlic Herb, Cinnamon Sugar, and Lemon Honey — each made in small batches in the west metro of the Twin Cities using real ingredients and no shortcuts.
Why did Lake and Churn start making compound butter? Chris and Jess started making compound butter because the options available locally — in grocery stores, from larger producers, across the west metro — didn't deliver the quality or flavor they were looking for. So Jess started experimenting. The first batch was good. The twentieth was better. Lake and Churn was the result.
Today Lake and Churn artisan compound butter is available at MN Lake and Bake serving Wayzata, Deephaven, Excelsior, Chaska, Plymouth, and Orono — and for local pickup at lakeandchurn.com.
